Feng Shui

We are often asked which book is a good read. It is difficult to recommend books regarding Feng Shui. First of all because very few books are about Traditional Feng Shui. Those that exist might to some extent differ from each other or from what we practice. Each lineage, each school has her specialties and might deal differently in some cases.

Many texts still exist and are available to Chinese readers. Yet Feng Shui training is still done the old way : principles and methods will be passed down from master to disciple, field training is where one learns and grows understanding.

So you have to remember that Feng Shui cannot be learned in books. Given this you will find in the books we mention below interesting information regarding some principles and methods, history, metaphysical and cultural background. They will give you a flavour of this fascinating issue.

Most reference we have are for books published in French. Every time we could, we have displayed the book's title in English.

First published in 1974, this book was welcomed with great enthusiasm by the feng shui enthusiasts community both in the east and in the west. Rarely before had detailed information been openly released on classical feng shui formulas, or the content and use of the lopan rings.
S. Feuchtwang edited this first version and offers a new release of his work. Chapters dedicated to wuxing (5 elements), yin and yang are also good value.
A reference book you will enjoy going back to whenever you have a chance.

La vérité des apparences

Zu-hui Yang, Hiria Ottino - La vérité des apparences - Guy Trédaniel Editeur

Alas that book only exists in French. Written by a French man who trained in China as a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. The author introduces us to the subtlety of Feng Shui practiced by masters in China. It gives a profound insight of the metaphysical background ancient arts rooted in.

Feng Shui methods exposed here might be difficult to grasp for absolute beginners.

Charles Chauderlot - Pékin - Les derniers jours (1996-2006) - Editions du Rouergue

Charles Chauderlot gathered drawings and paintings he made of Pekin old houses before they were broken down and replaced by skyscrapers. Browsing through the pages you will also come across cricket coaches, pigeon breeders among other unusual characters.

We enjoyed this book with more drawings than texts, though it offers great excerpts by Lao She that marry especially well with Charles Chauderlot drawings. A truly successful book in many aspects.

Mind and Life

In october 1987, a small party of scientists made their way to Dharamsala in India to meet his Highness the Dalaï-Lama, the leader of the Tibetan people. They all are high ranking researchers dealing with scientific approach of mind and life.

Those meetings were the opportunity to establish bridges for the first time between western science and buddhism.

The group met at various times and took upon a name : Mind and Body. Here are some of the transcriptions that have been made over the years. Special care has been taken by all parties to ensure the highest possible quality in the translation as both English and Tibetan were used. A master piece !

Even though most speakers are experts in their field, all texts are easily accessible to all readers.

Le livre tibétain de la vie et de la mort

Sogyal Rinpoche - Le livre tibétain de la vie et de la mort - Editions de la Table Ronde

We have enjoyed this book written by a contemporary Dzogchen renown master who is based in France. He states fundamentals of Tibetan buddhism in a very clear manner, and we were taken by his warm approach to various issues.

We have often recommended it with success to people who were new to the subject and wanted to have a feel. How is a master brought up in Tibet ? What is meditation ? Why should some undergo such sufferings in their lives ? What is karma ? And many other issues.

The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, & Liberation: The Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and Other

This book has a very poetic atmosphere. Many classic texts written in verses often are difficult to read, they make use of symbols and pictures that are foreign to us. Here everything is crystal clear. A book to read asap to learn compassion and love, first step on our way to enlightenment.
