The 5 elements
The alphabet
The alphabet that make up our chart is directly linked to the 5 elements:
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
Each element exist in yang and yin form. The sun is yang fire and as such as qualities very different from yin fire, the flame. Yang fire gives birth, yin fire will set a forest in fire. This shows we should not believe that yin is weak and yang is strong.
The elements are all over
Every element of the alphabet is linked to the 5 elements.
Regarding stems, the relation is direct. There are 10 stems, one yin and one yang stem per element.
![]() Jia | ![]() Yi | ![]() Bing | ![]() Ding | ![]() Wu | ![]() Ji | ![]() Geng | ![]() Xin | ![]() Ren | ![]() Gui |
As for branches, it is slightly more complicated as most branches comprise more than one element.
![]() Zi | ![]() Chou | ![]() Yin | ![]() Mao | ![]() Chen | ![]() Si | ![]() Wu | ![]() Wei | ![]() Shen | ![]() You | ![]() Xu | ![]() Hai |
It is customary to say that stems are pure and simple, that they represent an ideal order of things, something very subtle that shapes our life on the long run. Branches represent a more immediate and personified type of energy.
Relations that prevail among elements are extremely meaningful. Once you understand how the elements display in your chart, you have a very solid base to better live your life.
