FAQ

I feel nice at home, does it mean I have good feng shui?

There is a question people repeatedly ask us: "I feel good at home. Does it mean I enjoy good feng shui?"

Thanks to the Feng shui and health Research Program we are running since 2002 we have met with many people suffering various severe conditions such as tumours, cancers, tuberculosis,... A lot of them enjoyed very much the place where they lived and felt it was great. A feng shui diagnosis often showed clearly that their home could create health issues. From our point of view, this shows that one may feel well in a place that's not very supportive for him/her. So much for our intuition.

Should we then be blind to our sensations? Of course not. If you live in a place and have enjoyed a balanced life for the past few years then it is reasonable to think it supports you. If after moving to a new place, you start having problems you didn't have before, then this should get you thinking and you might as well check with an expert if anything is wrong in your feng shui.

I would very much like to build a swimming pool in front of the house, ...

"I read that it's all right as long as the angle are not sharp. Is it true?"

Water is of extreme importance in feng shui because it captures and concentrates the qi. So water is very powerful. Be it a fish pond or a swimming pool, the position of the water in relation to your house is of prime importance, not the fact that it has rounded shapes or is behind trees and bushes. There is no set rules like the water must be in front of the house or at the back; each case has to be considered very carefully.

Because the water is very powerful, having water around can bring great opportunities or cause infamous disasters. The rules that are to be considered for the placement and direction of water are complex and many. We can only urge you to seek advice before you build a water tank, a fountain, a swimming pool.

How to pick up a competent and skilled feng shui practictionner?

A consultation is an important event. You are going to spend some time on it. After the audit you will go for changes or take decisions that will change something in your life and sometimes those changes will be big. So take your time and make sure the person you will be appointing is worth your trust. Is he a serious professional ? Are you going to feel comfortable working with him/her?

Check who he has been trained by and if this master is a respected practitioner in the traditional feng shui community. Feng shui can't be professionally learnt in books, whatever some authors might say. Check Ecoles traditionnelles de feng shui section on this site to collect some information and don't hesitate to check what techniques he is familiar with.

Talk with him/her and don't be afraid to ask questions. Make sure you know what you will come up with : how many appointments, will you be given a report? what about follow-up? Make sure that after the audit you will be able to get in touch to ask questions or and further checkings.

Finally, in 99% cases it is not possible to do an audit without going on site. Taking measures inside and outisde is a tricky business that requires experience, external assessement is very important and also requires skills and a trained eye. In most cases pictures and plans won't equal personal examinations of the location. Remember this if the consultant offers to do so in order to offer you better prices.

Is feng shui identical to geobiology?

Geobiology is based on the analysis of electromagnetic and water currents. It checks geopathological stresses.

Feng shui deals with qi, a kind of energy that we cannot measure but we can see if we know how to conduct proper observation.

Does feng shui work even for people who don't believe in it?

Feng shui considers the qualities of the qi that surrounds us : its strength, the way we interact with it, its timeliness, .... Whether we believe qi exists or not doesn't prevent us from being affected. When doing consultation, a feng shui consultant can often tell what has happened, to which person and even when events occurred. He can tell if you had health problems, if you are doing fine financially. He can do so not because he's a psychic but because he knows how to read the environment and the way energies interact. It doesn't matter if you believe in the very existence of these energies, it doesn't stop them from affecting you.

Feng shui does not work because you believe in it. Feng shui works because a skilled professional proceeds to the right analysis and goes to the right conclusions.

What can I do with all the information related to ming guas?

In the books or on Internet, one can find pages of characteristics related to the guas, such as forms, colors, odors, sounds, ... Those qualities are actually related to the trigrams used in all classical Chinese arts and taoism. Trigrams are used in many situations and arts to describe qis and how they interract.

Let's take an example. Gua 1 is related to kan trigram that is paired with water element. One should ot jump to the conclusion that water is the most suitable element for a gua 1 person or that he must wear blue or black attire or live in a room with blue painted walls. We must be careful not to go to take short cuts that look attractive but may lead to mistakes.

If you wish to know which colour is most suitable for you, you must take a look at your Ba Zi. Ba Zi is a Chinese astrological art. Don't derive this information from feng shui that deals with more powerful energies related to our environment.

Remember this : the gua is used to determine how you react to energies determined by directions and locations. Which directions are good for you? What type of qi encompasses you when you face north or north west for example.

Does feng shui rely on religious belief?

Feng shui is an art or a science, depending on the way you look at it. It certainly bears the signs of the culture it was born in and is very much impregnated of Chinese philosophical and cultural principles : interrelation of man and cosmos, cosmic trinity, karmic links, serene acceptance that the world is partly visible and partly invisible ... But religion is not in the scope.

Is feng shui intuitive?

Definitely no. A traditional feng shui consultant will make use of rules, principles that have proved right over a very long period of time. His work requests strong analysis abilities, a capacity to pull things together, definite skills to understand his clients needs and … humility. He must have in depth knowledge and understanding of theory and have thorough field practice. When at work, a traditional feng shui consultant does not "feel" the elements or the site: he reads them and he proceeds to analysis.
